Ergonomic Sleeping

Mother, why do we sleep?

The Greeks (Hippocrates) believed that sleep was caused by vapours rising up from the digestive system. The Romans assumed that the soul detached itself from the body when a person was asleep. Magicians, visionaries and sorcerers have communicated through sleep with the deceased and the gods! These days we know better (or at least we think we do).

Scientific research into sleep:

A normal night’s rest of seven to eight hours consists of five cycles of approximately 90 minutes. Each cycle has stages of light sleep (considerable brain activity), deep sleep (slowing down of brainwaves, production of growth hormones and cell repair) and REM sleep (Rapid Eye Movement; substantial mental activity and dreams). The sleep cycles and stages differ according to age, customs (for example whether or not the person takes an afternoon nap every day), race and culture.

The sleeping behaviour of most mammals is similar to ours, although predators, for example, have more REM sleep than prey, which have to be more vigilant. Apparently no real state of sleep occurs in the case of some fish, and dolphins let the two halves of their brain sleep separately. So there is still plenty of scope for research.

Nirwana’s basic principle: sleep as a period of recovery:

Your night’s rest determines how you feel the next day, and - in the long run - even the quality of your life. We talk of night’s rest, but in actual fact our body works at night: heart, lungs, brain, digestion and cell exchange continue to be active, hormones are produced and, importantly for our spinal column, intervertebral discs absorb moisture (rehydrate). As far as our muscles are concerned, and mentally, we come to a state of rest.

To enable this process to pass off under optimal conditions, you are advised to sleep in a natural, comfortable and peaceful environment. This is why Nirwana combines the ergonomic with the ecological.

Nirwana’s approach: personal, independent and professional:

Our staff give comprehensive explanations and independent advice, and, together with you, look for a sleep system suited to you. After all, every person is different. An initial visit to our sleep department typically lasts one to two hours.

Nirwana has far-reaching personally adjustable systems at its disposal. Sometimes the base is what contributes primarily to the ergonomic factor, whereas in other cases the mattress takes the lead. Whichever the case, a correct combination of base and mattress is essential.

Some customers are only looking for a new mattress. Nirwana offers mattresses made of natural latex (up to 98% natural latex, whilst the Belgian market refers to a natural latex mattress as soon as the core contains 50 to 60% natural latex). Natural rubber has a very high point elasticity which it maintains for a very long time (10 years or more), has pressure-distributing and supporting properties, is anti-bacterial and not a breeding ground for dust mites, affords excellent airing, and is available in various degrees of hardness, with guarantees up to 10 years. Not bad for a natural product.
